Tuesday Mornings at 9:00 am
Our men get together every Tuesday morning at 9:30 am for breakfast, prayer, and sometimes a little bit of work about the church. Each week, the Scripture text for the following Sunday is discussed and debated. They often have a project they work on; perhaps some painting, some minor plumbing activity, miscellaneous repairs, etc. At this time, we are bringing our own breakfast, however, we do usually have great fellowship with cooking breakfast. All men are welcome – even those who must ‘eat and run’ in order to get to work.
Worthington Golf Course
Every Monday at 5 pm during the summer
“The Luthers” as they are called, gather to play golf every Monday at 5 pm during the summer at Worthington Golf Course in Parkersburg.
We have some very good players … and then there are the rest of us … but no matter your handicap – everyone is welcome and everyone has a great time! The fellowship is great!
The season runs from early May through mid-September. We play our last round that afternoon and then, grudgingly, put our clubs away until next spring. All golfers are welcome to join in the weekly fun!
19th and Liberty Streets
Corner lot adjacent to the church parking lot
Community Garden (#1) is located in the corner lot – 19th and Liberty Streets – adjacent to the church parking lot. The garden provides fresh vegetables for our food pantry as well as anyone in the neighborhood who wants to stop by and help themselves to the fresh veggies provided daily. Veggies are placed in the special wooden display cart which was made especially for our garden by church member Bernie Poole.
The garden started out as a vision in 2012 to use some vacant land that used to be the site of our apartment building for a positive purpose for the community. Over the last few years it has been amazing to see how God is working through the hands of his children to cultivate the land into a sustainable garden. On any given day during the summer you can see a wide variety of people come and be blessed by the opportunity to reap the harvest that God has blessed us with through the garden.
Rt. 68 North
In spring, 2014, the Community Garden effort expanded to include a new site on Rt. 68 North, just north of the city. This garden spot (CG#2) is planted with veggies that are not as labor-intensive as those in the church-side garden. Potatoes, corn, beans are a part of the planting at this site and are made available with all of the other veggies from the original site adjacent to the church.
If you have a green thumb or just want to donate time to help in the garden we are always looking for helpers. We also can always uses tools, plants and financial assistance to support this program as well.
Vacation Bible School for 2021 will be held July 5th – July 9th in the evening. More information to come soon!
Some area churches have joined in this program, and plan to continue this successful joint effort.
Adults have also been included with special segments designed just for them. It has become a ‘win-win’ for all.
Each October First Lutheran holds a day-long German Festival. We put up a big tent on the lawn of the church and invite everyone to participate in the day. The most anticipated part of the day is eating the wonderful German food that the ‘church ladies’ prepare, along with Bill Kohler’s now-famous sauerbraten and spaetzle. The menu always includes German Potato Salad, Bratwurst (and hot dogs for the kids), along with Kraut, sauted peppers and onions, home-made German cakes, vats of root beer, etc.
The 2019 Festival will be held on Saturday, October 18, beginning at 10 am. There will be entertaiment for all ages, including a DJ, a live German band, polka dancing, arts and crafts for the kids, inflatable obstacle course, a Church origins booth plus Sanctuary tours. The day will conclude with a Hymn sing at 4 pm and a Holden Evening Prayer service at 4:30 pm.
The German Festival is eagerly anticipated each year and is open to the public.
